The interior is very warm and inviting. There are many, many windows spread throughout the house, especially the lower floor. There were so many windows, the engineer had to design large steel “moment frames” that are inside the walls. The large Great Room has 12 foot ceilings and windows nearly floor to ceiling. The rest of the downstairs has nine foot ceilings. The third floor upstairs has three bedrooms plus a master suite, plus a fourth floor loft that houses the “museum” which is where we have displays of cannery artifacts, antiques, pictures, and books that were from the era.
All the rooms are trimmed out in luxurious natural vertical grain Douglas fir. The interior trim work evokes a time when craftsmen took pride in their work.
The great room is open to the dining room and the kitchen. There is seating for fifteen people in the great room, although it is organized so that you can have an intimate conversation if you like. There is a cozy fireplace and in-ceiling speakers to set the mood right. There are also two flat screen televisions so everyone can watch TV if they like. The leather chairs and sofas are extremely comfortable, so sit back and relax, and enjoy the fantastic view from the front windows.
The Dining room is open to the great room and kitchen and has full windows on the other two sides. Bears, seals, eagles, salmon, and other wildlife are frequently seen right from the dining room windows.
A long custom built table made from cherry wood seats ten people comfortably. There is a bar with four additional seats for a front row seat to watch the skill of our chef in action.
The kitchen was designed from the start to produce great meals for our guests. The kitchen has a large, modern, four door built-in refrigerator to keep everything fresh. The DCS gas oven and stove are ready to make gourmet meals on a moment’s notice. And there are even five sinks in the kitchen to accommodate many functions. A commercial dishwasher makes sure all the dishes are sanitized and spotless for the next meal.
There are four total bedrooms at Saltery Lodge. Three are regular sized, and the Master Suite is super-sized. Each bedroom has its own “theme” highlighting some of the important influences of Alaska. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, cozy radiant floor heat and great views of the flats behind the house.
