Experience Alaska

A vacation is all about having a memorable experience. We understand that, and we will do everything we can to assure that you won't be able to stop talking about your Alaskan vacation. Because the lodge has a capacity of six, you will have it all to yourself. No other guests will divide the attention that we will give to you. Whether it is just relaxing on the beach, fishing, hiking through the forest, or taking pictures of bears on our beach, Saltery Lodge can accommodate you. We are here to cater this experience to the one you hoped it would be.

Your Vacation. Your Choice.

The vessel Sarana is a 40 foot power catamaran that is part of your Alaskan vacation. Your host, a licensed USCG captain, will take you out on the beautiful waters of southeast Alaska near Ketchikan. You can choose to go fishing for salmon, halibut and other fish. Or you can choose to go exploring the bays, rivers, and beaches that make up our beautiful archipelago. Look down into the water and see schools of salmon, crabs, starfish, or other life in the sea.

The lodge employs its own chef. As much as practical, your food will be catered to your desires. Enjoy the harvest of the ocean, and even your own catch if you desire. Enjoy your meal in our dining room with amazing waterfront and wildlife views directly from the windows. Or choose to eat out on our expansive deck with 270 degree waterfront views.

Alaska is all about the wildlife, and the Saltery Lodge is no exception. Just outside the window, we have resident seals that toss their salmon catch into the air, resident bald eagles and cranes that stealthily hunt the flats, bears that fish for salmon in our own salmon stream, and occasionally whales and dolphins that cruise the bay. Choose to walk the game trails into the old growth forest on our 62 acres, walking the same trails shared by all forest inhabitants. Or choose to self explore the bay and river where you will see even more wildlife. Or choose to be guided on water or land by your hosts, who will tell you what you are looking at.

Tranquility

Far different from the hustle and clanging of the old cannery that was previously on the 62 acres, Saltery Lodge is quiet and serene. Walking around the lodge, you will hear the rustle of trees, the distant waterfall, or animals and birds in the forest. Listen carefully for the eagles announcing their presence, or the snort of a seal above to dive. Even when it rains, you can listen to the sound on the metal roof at night, knowing that the water is cleansing the forest and providing a life line to the fish and wildlife in our rain forest. From the lodge windows you can see the quiet village of Loring, which used to house the cannery workers for our cannery.

Saltery lodge is bordered by the Tongass National Forest. This national forest in southeast Alaska contains about 17 million acres. We get a lot of rain here, and in fact, it is classified as a temperate rain forest. But this rain, is also the driving engine of the old-growth forest and the tremendous fishing and other activities. Its what makes this area very special. You will be able to hike a very short distance and see trees that are hundreds of years old, and over 9 feet across at the base.

The property was once the site of a thriving Alaska cannery (1875-1930). Almost all the old buildings are gone, and all that is left are some houses adjacent to the property where some of the cannery workers used to live. There are still many remnants you will see while walking through the woods, such as trees growing up through old bed frames. The loft of the lodge contains a mini-museum, showing items and pictures from the Saltery and of the turn of the century.

Tour the historic city of Ketchikan with your hosts, the Kemps. Scott grew up in Ketchikan and will guide you around the town. Ketchikan gets about 1,000,000 visitors a year in our tiny town of 14,000. There are many places to shop and many activities to do.

Your hosts, the Kemps, are looking forward to making your stay very memorable. Scott is a third generation Alaskan and will be guiding you and hosting you along with his wife Angela.
