Stalking Bears at Saltery Lodge

I needed to get some good footage of some the bears that were frequenting our stream here on the property.  So I packed my camera and approached a spot that the bears had been using to catch salmon.  I approached from the downwind side and snuck up on a sow bear with two cubs.

I had the pleasure of watching them fish for salmon without them knowing I was there.  The sow would catch the salmon then bring it back for her cubs to eat.

What A thrill.  I hope you like the video.

Fantastic Tours for Ketchikan Cruise Ship Passengers

For 2010, Saltery Lodge is offering some great new tours for people visiting Ketchikan on a cruise ship.  Come out and see the lodge, the wildlife, and the scenic views from our waterfront lodge.  We pick you up at your ship, give you a narrated van tour out of the north end of Ketchikan, then whisk you away in our boat to the lodge.  You are likely to see wildlife on the boat trip out to the lodge, with eagles common sights, and occasional deer, bear, whales, and seals.

Taming the Alaskan Hummingbird – The Story Behind “The Shot”

Finally, I have finished the video describing in full detail our experiences hand feeding hummingbirds in Alaska.  Were it not for a little hummingbird I called “Rufous,” these pictures never would have happened.  Thanks Rufous!

Would you like to feed the hummingbirds? Check out our Ketchikan Tours available for cruise ship passengers at our lodge!

Only in Alaska

Bringing my family back to the lodge for the holidays is sometimes a real adventure.  Last year we had our chains on driving through iced up roads on I-5 near Seattle, watching cars go into ditches and trucks jackknife.

This year was less adventurous as far as travel goes, but only four hours after arriving in Alaska we were treated to a nature show that Alaska is famous for.  On the boat ride out to the lodge, in 28 degree weather, we came across two humpback whales feeding at the surface.  The were surface feeding and not bubble feeding, this time.

Hand Feeding Hummingbirds in Alaska

We get a lot of hummingbirds in June at Saltery Lodge.  If you have ever had a humming bird feeder, you know how much fun they are to watch.  This evening, it was particularly interesting. There was an adult male hummingbird that claimed the feeder for himself. This was not unusual by itself, as there is definitely a pecking order at the feeder.  But what made this unique was the fact that he claimed it for a couple hours!

Saltery Lodge is Born

What is it about Alaska?  What do visitors want to experience when they visit?  Why do more than a million people come here every year?  The answer I have come up with can be summed with four simple words: “Alaska memories last forever”.

I spent my childhood in Ketchikan living those future memories.  For three of those years, I lived on an island much smaller than Ketchikan’s Revilla Island.  Directly across the channel from Ketchikan, everything we did revolved around a boat.  We got to school via a boat, shopping via a boat, work via a boat, going to the hospital via a boat, and or course fishing with a boat.
