Fantastic Tours for Ketchikan Cruise Ship Passengers

For 2010, Saltery Lodge is offering some great new tours for people visiting Ketchikan on a cruise ship.  Come out and see the lodge, the wildlife, and the scenic views from our waterfront lodge.  We pick you up at your ship, give you a narrated van tour out of the north end of Ketchikan, then whisk you away in our boat to the lodge.  You are likely to see wildlife on the boat trip out to the lodge, with eagles common sights, and occasional deer, bear, whales, and seals.

Taming the Alaskan Hummingbird – The Story Behind “The Shot”

Finally, I have finished the video describing in full detail our experiences hand feeding hummingbirds in Alaska.  Were it not for a little hummingbird I called “Rufous,” these pictures never would have happened.  Thanks Rufous!

Would you like to feed the hummingbirds? Check out our Ketchikan Tours available for cruise ship passengers at our lodge!

12 Burning Questions about Adobe Photoshop Color Profiles (FAQ)

You have problem heard about them, but do you really know what a color profile is?  What does that little box that comes up that asks what you want to do with “embedded color profiles” and “Convert Color profiles?”  Huh?  Just click OK and make the box go away?

NO.  You need to know.  Ignorance is not bliss in this case.  Accurate colors are required for creating art or processing photos in a predictable and repeatable way.  Now the talk about color profiles is all academic unless you calibrate your monitor.  If you don’t, you will be shooting in the dark anyway, so there is not a huge need to know the ballistics of your ammo.

Photoshop Workflow You Can Use – 12 Must Follow Steps for Making Great Color Photos.

Did you take a great photo, and got it to look good on your computer screen, only to find out that after you publish it to the web, or give it to a friend, or print it at a photo printing place that the colors are all wrong?  Then you need to follow these steps.  This is the work flow that I use for processing my photos (See more at Alaska Grand Photography).

Are you a Digital Professional? You need a Solid State Drive!

Once too pricey and too small for the average user, these solid state hard drives, which have no moving parts, are priced and sized for everyday professional users.  After upgrading my Windows 7 64 bit machine to a Solid State Drive (SSD), I had a perceived increase in speed of at least 100% doing my Adobe Photoshop and Premiere operations and launching and using multiple programs at the same time.  The boot time was cut in half!  Some applications such as PT-Gui sped up 5-10 times!

Only in Alaska

Bringing my family back to the lodge for the holidays is sometimes a real adventure.  Last year we had our chains on driving through iced up roads on I-5 near Seattle, watching cars go into ditches and trucks jackknife.

This year was less adventurous as far as travel goes, but only four hours after arriving in Alaska we were treated to a nature show that Alaska is famous for.  On the boat ride out to the lodge, in 28 degree weather, we came across two humpback whales feeding at the surface.  The were surface feeding and not bubble feeding, this time.

Hand Feeding Hummingbirds in Alaska

We get a lot of hummingbirds in June at Saltery Lodge.  If you have ever had a humming bird feeder, you know how much fun they are to watch.  This evening, it was particularly interesting. There was an adult male hummingbird that claimed the feeder for himself. This was not unusual by itself, as there is definitely a pecking order at the feeder.  But what made this unique was the fact that he claimed it for a couple hours!

Jake’s Amputation and Indomitable Spirit

Meet Jake.  A four year old black lab who wants nothing more than to fetch sticks, hunt birds, and keep the bears away from the lodge.  A great family dog, Jake has been wonderful to my girls and our family.  Always giving 100%, never asking for a rest.  If you pick up a stick, Jake can go from a sound sleep to four alarm fetching mode in seconds!  We got him from a breeder of hunting dogs here in Oregon (Utopia Kennels) and the owner gave us the "middle of the pack" as far as temperament was concerned.  I am not sure I want to know what the "hot" dog would have been like… Jake is already a hunting machine on steroids.

Jake the Dog attacks Shark

In 2007,  my wife and I were standing on deck looking at the water. I saw what looked like a fish swimming on the surface of the water.  It was about 100yds away, and I looked closer and saw that it was a pretty healthy sized dog shark!  I commented to my wife how that looked like a shark!
